Animal Friends' Society of the Severna Primorska Region

WHO ARE WE?

Društvo prijateljev živali Severne Primorske (The Animal Friends' Society of the Severna Primorska Region) has been actively involved in the animal welfare scene since May 2009. It is a non-profit, non-governmental voluntary organisation whose members are exclusively volunteers, dedicating their free time to perform activities run by the society.

FUNDING

The society receives no governmental contributions and obtains funding mainly from membership fees and donations. In addition, handicraft, T-shirts and caledars are sold at society's stands and in the e-shop established on the society's website. All the proceeds go to help the animals in need.

GOALS

  • to promote animal welfare issues and raise people's awareness of animal righs,
  • to attempt to prevent animal cruelty, neglect and abuse in all forms,
  • to monitor and gather information about domestic and wild animal species,
  • to inform general public about the current Slovene legislation in the field of animal welfare and propose necessary legislative changes to relavant authorities.

ACTIVITIES

  • Active involvement in abandoned animal issues

The society collaborates with the carefully chosen shelters for abandoned animals and offers help to responsible individuals who can no longer keep their pets. Lost and abandoned animals are advertised on the soceity's website and in the form of posters and leaflets. The society members are actively involved in seeking suitable homes for abandoned animals and try to encourage adoptions of abandoned animals in general.

  • Active involvement in of spay-neuter programmes of feral cats

Together with the local authorities the society is actively involved in the spay-neuter programmes of feral cats. Performed using the »Trap – Neuter – Release« method, these activities are by law carried out by animal shelters. However, the society helps to coordinate the activities, offers help and support to individuals who feed feral cats and monitors feral cat colonies in the local environment.

  • Assistance in reporting animal cruelty cases

A major problem facing the society is the current Slovene legislation, which does not grant registered animal welfare societies any competences in terms of law enforcement (the right to investigate and reveal crimes and offences, the right to execute the rights of the aggrieved party, the right to take an animal away from its owner if the animal has been strikingly neglected or seriously abused etc.). Therefore, the society's powers are limited to gathering  the information about individual animal cruelty cases and reporting them to the relevant authorities (The Veterinary Administration of the Republic of Slovenia, and in some cases also the Police). The society helps the individuals to recognise the signs of animal neglect and maltreatment and offers them administrative support in the process of reporting animal cruely cases.

  • Running educational programmes to promote the general awareness regarding animal welfare issues

The socitey holds educational classes for kindergarten and school children and runs a long-term partnership programme with one of the local secondary schools, aiming to promote volunteering in animal welfare sociteties. The society also prints educational publications such as brochures etc.

  • ·Organising joint charity actions in collaboration with other organisations and societies

The society has sucessfully carried out two large-scale charity events – together with the cynology web portal called www.mojpes.net the society has organised online charity auctions of donated objects and raised significant amounts of money for the Horjul Shelter for Abandoned Animals. All objects auctioned were later donated to children with special needs and children from low-income families.

FUTURE AMBITIONS

The society will continue to strive to achieve its goals by implementing new ideas and carrying out new activities in order to help all animals in need and raise people's awareness of animal rights and general animal welfare. Since the society operates on a relatively large area (not only in the Severna Primorska region but the whole the western part of Slovenia) it faces the lack of staff-volunteers and funds.
